– What is a 14 Day Holter Monitor?

Two Weeks of Uninterrupted Cardiac Recording

The 14-day Holter monitor is our most comprehensive ambulatory ECG service, providing 336 continuous hours of heart rhythm data. It is the gold-standard investigation for patients whose symptoms are infrequent — occurring only once or twice per fortnight — and who have not had their symptoms captured by a shorter monitoring period.

The device is fitted at our clinic and electrode pads are replaced at the one-week mark. You wear the monitor throughout your normal daily life, maintaining a simple symptom diary to log any episodes of palpitations, dizziness, breathlessness or chest discomfort, along with the time they occur.

The extended duration of the recording also makes this monitor the preferred tool for comprehensive atrial fibrillation screening, where brief or asymptomatic episodes of AF may otherwise be completely missed.

A 14-day monitor is recommended when symptoms occur very infrequently — perhaps once or twice a fortnight — making a 7-day recording statistically insufficient to capture an event. It is also the preferred duration for comprehensive atrial fibrillation screening, where guidelines recommend extended monitoring to maximise detection of paroxysmal AF.

We provide comprehensive written instructions and everything you need for the mid-week electrode pad change. Our team is also available by phone throughout your monitoring period if you have any questions. The process is straightforward — most patients manage it with ease.
Almost all normal daily activities are fine: work, driving, walking, cycling, gym exercise, and sleeping. Swimming and full-immersion bathing should be avoided. Sex, travel and social activities are all absolutely fine — the monitor is designed to be worn through a full, normal life.

The consultant cardiologist's report will detail the predominant rhythm throughout the recording, maximum, minimum and average heart rates, the frequency and nature of any ectopic beats, evidence of any paroxysmal arrhythmias (including AF), and critically — whether any rhythm abnormalities directly correlated with the symptoms you recorded in your diary.

Yes — with your consent, the written report is sent directly to your GP or referring consultant. If an urgent finding is identified, our clinical team will contact your GP promptly. You also receive a copy of the full report for your own records.
