– What is a 7 Day Holter Monitor?
A 7-day Holter monitor functions in the same way as a 24-hour monitor but provides a dramatically longer recording window — 168 continuous hours of heart rhythm data. This makes it substantially more likely to capture arrhythmias that occur only a few times per week.
The monitor is posted directly to your home — there’s no need to attend the clinic. It’s small and lightweight, attaching to electrodes on your chest with no trailing wires. You apply it yourself on the day it arrives, using the printed instructions and fitting videos provided. Midway through the week you swap the electrode pads for the fresh set included in your pack — a simple step most people manage easily at home, or we’re happy to do it for you at the clinic.
At the end of the seven days you post the device back with your symptom diary in the prepaid envelope provided. Our cardiologists then perform a full analysis of the recording, identifying any significant rhythm abnormalities and correlating them with the times you recorded symptoms.
Your GP, specialist, or our team may recommend 7-day monitoring for any of the following reasons.
Your Appointment
We provide a full instructions sheet and a spare set of electrode pads. Changing them mid-week is a simple process: you peel off the old pads, clean the skin with a provided wipe, and attach the new pads in the same positions. If you prefer, you can come into the clinic and a member of our team will do this for you.
Yes — most patients sleep normally. The monitor is small and sits flat against your chest, so it’s unobtrusive at night. Night-time recordings are particularly valuable, as some arrhythmias occur more frequently during sleep.
If you experience severe chest pain, collapse, or are concerned about a serious episode, please call 999. The Holter monitor is a diagnostic tool, not an emergency response device. Do note the time and your symptoms in your diary, as this will be very useful for the cardiologist. Call our team for guidance if you have any concerns that are not an emergency.
Your clinician recommended 7-day monitoring because your symptoms are likely occurring less than daily, making a 24-hour capture window statistically unlikely to record an event. Extending the monitoring to 7 days significantly increases the probability of catching a rhythm abnormality at the exact moment you experience symptoms.
Yes — short showers are fine throughout the seven days. Just pat the monitor dry afterwards and avoid baths, swimming or submerging it. The fresh electrodes you apply mid-week help keep the fit secure and comfortable.
Your monitoring is provided in partnership with CardioScan, a CQC-registered specialist cardiac monitoring service. Your device is posted to you, and once returned, your recording is analysed by CardioScan’s cardiac physiologists and reported by a consultant cardiologist. You receive a clear written report, and the whole process is overseen by our clinical team at Jenhams.
Yes. Your written report is sent to you. Many patients also like to talk their results through in person, so we offer a private GP consultation at Jenhams to go over your report, explain what it means for you, and agree any next steps — whether that’s reassurance, starting treatment, or arranging an onward referral. You can book this when you arrange your test, or once your results are ready. (from £60)
Of course. If you haven’t been referred for a specific test, the right length of monitoring depends mainly on how often your symptoms occur. If you’re unsure, we’d recommend a short private GP telephone consultation first: one of our GPs will review your symptoms and history and recommend the most appropriate test, giving you the best chance of a clear answer first time. The consultation fee can be redeemed against the cost of your monitoring. (from £20)
